Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Free to use. No purchase, no subscription, no in app purchases, and no ads. There is no premium tier or paid shortcut past the math. There is no checkout and no credit card field anywhere in the product.
The game has its own currencies: star tokens in the Attic, slime bucks in the Basement. The game's currencies are earned by doing math and cannot be bought with money. There is no exchange rate, because there is nothing to exchange.
There are also no advertisements. Nothing to watch, skip, or accidentally tap.
It won't load at my school. What's going on?
Almost always a district content filter rather than a problem with the site.
School filters sort websites into categories, and anything that looks like a game is often blocked as a category, regardless of what it does. Some filters also block domains they haven't categorised yet, by default.
Ask your IT team to allow mathroom.fun. It's a browser based educational math program for grades 1 through 9 with no accounts, no advertising, no purchases, and no student data collection, which is usually all they need to hear.
If the block persists after that, email hello@mathroom.fun and we'll help.
Does it work on Chromebooks and school tablets?
Runs in a browser. Nothing to install, no extension, no admin rights. It works on Chromebooks, iPads, Windows and Mac laptops, and phones.
You can also add it to a device's home screen if you want it to open like an app, but that's optional.
Is there an app store version?
No, and there doesn't need to be. Mathroom runs in the browser at mathroom.fun, which means no install, no store account, no app store age gate, and no update to push. On a phone or tablet you can add it to the home screen and it opens the same way an installed app would.
Can I get a report for my whole class?
Partly, and it's important to understand the shape of it.
Mathroom keeps progress on the device, because there are no accounts. Printable progress reports for one learner or for the learners saved in the current world on this device. The progress report has two views: This Player for one learner, and Whole Device for every learner saved on the device you're using, in the current world. Both can be printed.
So on a shared classroom tablet or a family computer, Whole Device gives you the saved learners in the current world on that machine. What it cannot do is gather thirty students from thirty different devices into one dashboard, because that would require accounts and a server, and we don't collect student data.
For most classroom uses (a station tablet, a small group, a family) Whole Device is what you want.
Which grade should my child use?
Start with their current grade. Choose the learner’s current grade, 1 through 9, to practice math from the previous school year. Grade 1 practices kindergarten math.
You can change the track at any time, and changing it doesn't erase anything. If you aren't sure, begin with the Review tile at the start of a track. It's a short, unscored check in across the topic areas and it gives you a feel for whether the level fits.
A child who finds it too easy or too hard is one tap from a different track.
How do I move progress to a different device?
Progress saves automatically in the browser on the device being used. For moving to another device, use a portable backup.
Select the player and the world you want, export the backup file, keep it somewhere you can find it, then load it on the new device into the selected player and world. Check those labels when you load it: the backup carries one player's progress for one world.
Export a backup before wiping a device, changing browsers, or doing a fresh start. It's the one piece of housekeeping worth doing.
Can our district use it? Do we need a license or a contract?
Yes, and no.
It's free, with no license, no contract, no seat count, and no procurement process. Point teachers at mathroom.fun and they can start.
If your district needs documentation to approve it, see the pages for privacy, accessibility, and standards. If something's missing that your district requires, email hello@mathroom.fun and we'll write it.
Do you collect any student data?
No accounts. No email address, no password, nothing to sign up for.
No student data collected. Progress is stored on the device.
No advertising trackers and no marketing profiles.
Does it work offline?
Core play and previously loaded content work offline. Prepare the offline kit while connected if you're heading somewhere without a connection. The radio and newly loaded video need a connection.
Are the voices real people?
No. The character voices are synthetic. We say so rather than leaving it ambiguous. The writing, design, and pedagogy behind them are the product of deliberate authorship, and the math content is generated by a tested, deterministic system rather than improvised.
My child used the worked steps. Does that hurt their progress?
Not at all, and this is deliberate. Opening Show Steps makes that round practice only rather than scored, so a learner can study the solution without penalty. A fresh problem then gives them a clean chance to use the method.
Help is unlimited and never penalised. What it doesn't do is quietly inflate a mastery report, so when a report says a topic is understood, it means it.
Can my child lose, or lose progress?
A wrong math answer does not remove earned currency or collectibles. You can retry and choose to open Help. Action games have health and hazards, and a platformer level may need another attempt. Saved progress can be lost if browser data is cleared; export a backup before device cleanup.
